I heard these three things on various radios stations on my way into work. I was impressed at how little there is in the world to discuss...and how much there is to say about it.

I married Isis on the fifth day of May,
But I could not hold on to her very long.
So I cut off my hair and I rode straight away
For the wild unknown country where I could not go wrong.

"Often a dramatic change is adopted as a way to be reborn into a new role in life. Disillusionment or shortcoming along the path of life can take even a middle-aged youngster (in mind) to a new highway of exploration. Most often, the individual, having parted from what was previously perceived to be the most important of all things, will blame the changes on a shortcoming of his own. The re-invention of self is simultaneously an act of humility and submission without being a concession of personal power. It is taken to be a challenge rather than punishment."

I came to a high place of darkness and light.
The dividing line ran through the center of town.
I hitched up my pony to a post on the right,
Went in to a laundry to wash my clothes down.

"The mundane becomes overly deep and meaningful. The journey unfolds and revelation is brought more by the individual than the surroundings."

A man in the corner approached me for a match.
I knew right away he was not ordinary.
He said, "Are you lookin' for somethin' easy to catch?"
I said, "I got no money." He said, "That ain't necessary."

"Unenlightened, the student is disoriented and distrusts outside inquiry, while putting out as many tacit signals of need as he can. There is a tendency to protect himself from everything contrasting with a desire for outside help."

We set out that night for the cold in the North.
I gave him my blanket, he gave me his word.
I said, "Where are we goin'?" He said we'd be back by the fourth.
I said, "That's the best news that I've ever heard."

"An apprehension accompanies the student/mentor relationship. In the beginning the student tries desperately to pay for the lessons and the master offers only a commitment and nothing of literal or mundane value. The master is seen to be above the secular or unspiritual elements of the world. The student, uncertain of his growing desire to embark on the lessons, looks for relief in advance of that which he fears undertaking."

I was thinkin' about turquoise, I was thinkin' about gold,
I was thinkin' about diamonds and the world's biggest necklace.
As we rode through the canyons, through the devilish cold,
I was thinkin' about Isis, how she thought I was so reckless.

"The journey is one of learning the real meaning of value. The student will start from a base of monetary or otherwise quantifiable value and will begin to redefine wealth in terms of the abstract. As he grows toward enlightenment, he finds the true definitions of wealth lie in things already known, but obscured."

How she told me that one day we would meet up again,
And things would be different the next time we wed,
If I only could hang on and just be her friend.
I still can't remember all the best things she said.

"Regret of past experiences before enlightenment and self examination are common. Over simplification of the past is also the earmark of a life re-examined."

We came to the pyramids all embedded in ice.
He said, "There's a body I'm tryin' to find.
If I carry it out it'll bring a good price."
'Twas then that I knew what he had on his mind.

"At some point, the master cannot hide his own ties to the mundane, secular, or non-spiritual. An often underestimated part of the enlightenment of the student is the realization that his master is indeed subject to the temptations and needs of the common man. In realizing this, the student finds the kindness required for compassion and, ultimately, enlightenment."

The wind it was howlin' and the snow was outrageous.
We chopped through the night and we chopped through the dawn.
When he died I was hopin' that it wasn't contagious,
But I made up my mind that I had to go on.

"Eventually, the quest and adventure becomes the student's own. The master's purpose as a catalyst is more important than his role as guide. The student, in undertaking the adventure himself, proves his growth in the very areas set out to be improved by the journey."

I broke into the tomb, but the casket was empty.
There was no jewels, no nothin', I felt I'd been had.
When I saw that my partner was just bein' friendly,
When I took up his offer I must-a been mad.

"Self doubt will plague the student as he continues to seek meaning in the adventure. At some point, the original goal may be abandoned, leaving doubt that must be transformed into a new, more personal, definition of the purpose of the undertaking. It is at this point that the student may begin to define the real meaning of his own existence."

I picked up his body and I dragged him inside,
Threw him down in the hole and I put back the cover.
I said a quick prayer and I felt satisfied.
Then I rode back to find Isis just to tell her I love her.

"As the enlightenment solidifies, the student finds fulfillment in his actions and comes to separate false wealth from true wealth. Atonement becomes central to the future of the student, rooting future possibility in the needs to answer the past."

She was there in the meadow where the creek used to rise.
Blinded by sleep and in need of a bed,
I came in from the East with the sun in my eyes.
I cursed her one time then I rode on ahead.

"Internal struggle and resistance envelopes the desires to live life changed by the journey."

She said, "Where ya been?" I said, "No place special."
She said, "You look different." I said, "Well, not quite."
She said, "You been gone." I said, "That's only natural."
She said, "You gonna stay?" I said, "Yeah, I jes might."

"The past may be more or less accepting of the adventurer as he returns. What he has learned may or may not be welcome in the context of the past, but it is central to any possible success in the future."

Isis, oh, Isis, you mystical child.
What drives me to you is what drives me insane.
I still can remember the way that you smiled
On the fifth day of May in the drizzlin' rain.

"Ultimately, if the cycle doesn't return full circle, there is no hope for the enlightenment to take hold and for the student to become a master to another one day."
